Our community
The Bioitzá community is an indigenous organization made up of 101 members from the municipality of San José, Petén, Guatemala. It is made up mostly of people from the Maya Itzá ethnic group, an ancestral group with deep cultural and territorial roots in the Lake Petén Itzá region. The Association is dedicated to the protection of the Bioitzá community reserve, which covers 2,661 hectares, and to the management of a 24,000 hectare forest concession called El Lechugal. Its mission is to promote sustainable development, protect natural resources, preserve its cultural identity and transmit the ancestral knowledge of its ancestors.

Generate the well-being of the members of the Association as part of the Itzá Community through their integral development, the sustainable use of natural resources, the conservation of the Biosphere Reserve, and the promotion of their unique cultural identity in Guatemala.

To be recognized locally, regionally, nationally and internationally as the leading organization in the municipality of San José, Petén that promotes the conservation of the environment and the cultural values of the Itzá community.
About us

Management of our Mayan Itza territory


With an area of 2,661 hectares, the Bio-Itzá Reserve is a key space for the protection of biodiversity. Located in the municipality of San José, Petén, this reserve is managed sustainably, promoting the conservation of local ecosystems and forest restoration.

El Lechugal, with 24,000 hectares within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, is a community forest concession that represents an important step forward in the defense of ancestral territory. Its sustainable management allows for the responsible use of resources and the protection of wildlife.
Our projects
Through a series of comprehensive projects, Bioitzá works to preserve the legacy of the Itzá Maya people, protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development. From education and the production of medicinal plants to the responsible management of natural resources, each initiative reinforces our commitment to culture, ancestral knowledge and ecological balance.

Sustainable Management
Bioitzá implements sustainable management practices that include low-impact timber extraction, forest restoration with native species and the responsible use of non-timber products, ensuring the conservation of natural resources and community development.
